Description

The USB Sniffer is a compact hardware-and-software solution designed for engineers, firmware developers, and hardware designers who need visibility into USB data streams. At its core, the design uses a Cypress CY7C68013A microcontroller, a Lattice LCMXO2 FPGA, and a Microchip USB3343 PHY.

Key features:

  • Works with LS, FS, and HS USB device traffic.
  • Captures USB packets and exports to PCAPNG format, compatible with Wireshark.
  • Can be used as a standalone command-line tool or as a Wireshark extcap plugin.
  • Open-source hardware design: Gerber files, case STL files, and firmware sources are included.
  • Both Windows and Linux are supported for host software; Linux users can set up Udev rules for access.
  • Use cases include debugging device firmware, analyzing USB class behavior, reverse-engineering USB device traffic, and validating USB-compliance of new hardware.

Since the design leverages low-cost components and open-source tooling, it offers an accessible alternative to expensive commercial USB sniffers, while still providing professional-grade traffic capture and analysis.
